Free Dog Training Guide – Lead Pulling and Tugging
This is probably the most common problem you will have with your puppy or dog; but it is one of the basic everyday skills that is easy to teach. To proceed training your dog you will first need to teach him/her to “heel” as this is the basic command that is the foundation for all future training. Teaching your dog to walk on a loose lead by your side is essential in any training and without this basic command, you won’t be able to proceed with more advanced skills. Allowing your dog to pull you and push ahead sends out all the wrong signals and he will just learn to do his own thing.
An important piece of equipment you will need for training is a strong collar and lead or a canine body harness. This will help you if you are either training a new puppy or re-training a dog that has developed bad habits. When using one of these pieces for the first time it is important to let the dog get used to it by allowing the dog to move around while wearing it so he doesn’t feel restricted. However, it is important not to let go of your dog as this will cause you to lose control of him.
When teaching this lesson it is important that you keep the lead slack. If your dog starts to pull on the lead you should quickly change your direction. This then puts the dog in the position of lagging behind you rather than pulling ahead. It is important that the lead is kept loose apart from the one second it takes for you to change direction; as it is also important that the dog feels a quick tug on the lead but then feels it is loose again.
This method allows you to give your dog freedom to roam but the control remains with you.
